Welsh local authorities may have an opportunity to access Brexit funding for ports to level with English local authorities with major ports recently allocated a share of GB£3.14m to help prepare for 29 March and beyond, a Pembrokeshire County Council spokesperson has said.
Following MP Stephen Crabb’s declaration last month that Pembrokeshire and other Welsh counties should be given the same funding for their ports as counties in England, Pembrokeshire County Council press and PR manager Len Mullins said that the council is currently discussing the possibility of funding provision with the Welsh Government.
“We are aware of Mr Crabb’s statement,” he said, adding “we are exploring with the Welsh Government the possibility of similar funding being made available to Welsh local authorities with ports.”
Local authorities in the running for funding include Pembrokeshire, which has three ports: Fishguard, Milford Haven, and Pembroke Dock.
In February, the UK government announced that 19 district and unitary councils in England will receive £136,362 to the end of April for each major port of entry into the UK in their area.
Ports of entry within selected local authorities include Dover, Ramsgate, Goole, Hull, Grimsby, Immingham, Portsmouth, Southampton, Harwich and Felixstowe.
